Extension of the Elementary School_Veleň

phase: Architectural study year: 2024 photo/visual: BekArch s.r.o.

Design of a simple extension to the existing school, aimed at increasing the capacity of teaching spaces while enhancing overall comfort. The main goal of the design is to improve the quality of the cloakroom and the dining area, which are currently in a poor, provisional state. The extension provides new spaces that meet contemporary requirements and create a pleasant environment. It also includes two new classrooms, a teacher’s office, and a multipurpose club for extracurricular and leisure activities, which can also serve as additional teaching space or an after-school program area.

On the ground floor, a new cloakroom serves as the main entrance to the building, with flexible access either from the newly constructed parking lot to the west or from the village to the north. The cloakroom is open to two façades, creating a bright and airy space. A staircase with an elevator connects the cloakroom to the upper floors, and access to the existing building is also possible. The ground floor also houses a multifunctional club with a terrace exit and a new dining area. In warm months, the dining area can be connected to the outdoor terrace, providing garden seating.

The first floor contains two classrooms for 30 students each, a teacher’s office (which can also be used as a staff room), and sanitary facilities. The classrooms are connected to the existing building via a few steps. The corridor along the classrooms is filled with natural light, illuminated by skylights along its full length to ensure maximum comfort and brightness. Beneath the central section of the building, a basement houses the necessary technical and utility facilities.
